Lessons from The Coast

What a few days in Beaufort reminded me about slowing down, soaking up summer, and caring for the skin we’re in.

Julia’s Cottage in Beaufort, North Carolina.

There is something about the coast that has always invited me to slow down.

This past weekend, our little family escaped to Beaufort, North Carolina for a few days. We rented the sweetest waterfront cottage tucked along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. At just over 500 square feet, it wasn't grand by any means, but it didn't need to be. The cottage overlooked miles of marsh grass that shifted with every breeze, and from the porch we could watch fishing boats drift by as the day quietly unfolded.

I realized on our second afternoon that my favorite part of the trip wasn't the beach itself or even exploring the charming streets of historic Beaufort. It was sitting on that porch in complete stillness, watching the afternoon thunderstorms slowly gather over the ocean.

If you've ever spent time on the North Carolina coast in the summer, you know exactly what I mean. The mornings often begin with bright blue skies, but by late afternoon towering clouds begin to rise in the distance. They move almost imperceptibly at first until suddenly the entire horizon has transformed into a dramatic painting of deep blues and charcoal grays.

I could have watched them for hours.

There was something grounding about simply witnessing nature without feeling the need to photograph it, document it, or immediately share it. My phone remained inside more often than not, while I sat listening to the wind move through the marsh grasses and watched seagulls skim across the water.

Those quiet moments reminded me how often we miss what is happening right in front of us because our attention is somewhere else.

Our days unfolded slowly, just as they should at the coast. We wandered through Beaufort's historic streets without much of a plan, pausing often to admire homes that have quietly stood for generations.  We ate early dinners by the waterfront, watched boats come and go from the harbor, and spent long afternoons at the beach where our son splashed happily in the waves while my husband and I soaked in the sunshine.

Summer asks something different of us than the rest of the year. It encourages us outside. It reminds us that dinner tastes better on a patio, conversations last longer by the water, and children somehow always find more joy with sand between their toes than they ever do in front of a screen.

I think we spend so much time talking about protecting ourselves from the sun that we've forgotten to appreciate what sunlight gives us in return.

Of course, respecting the sun is important. Sunscreen is one of the most valuable things we can pack for a day at the beach, and reapplying it throughout the day is one of the simplest ways we can care for our skin. But sunlight itself isn't the enemy. It helps our bodies produce vitamin D, supports healthy serotonin levels, lifts our mood, and reconnects us to the natural world in a way very few things can.

Like so much in nature, it's less about avoidance and more about balance.

The same sunshine that fills us with energy can also leave our skin feeling depleted. After several days of saltwater, warm breezes, sunscreen, and long afternoons outdoors, I could feel that familiar tightness that always tells me my skin is asking for something different. Summer doesn't just expose our skin to more sunlight; it exposes it to dehydration. Heat draws moisture away, saltwater strips away natural oils, and even a healthy tan is often accompanied by dryness and inflammation beneath the surface.

That's exactly why I packed Stone Crop.

If you've spent any time with us at The Tiny Spa recently, you've probably heard me mention this remarkable little succulent more than once. It has quietly become my favorite botanical ingredient for summer, not because it's trendy, but because it does exactly what summer skin needs.

Stone Crop is naturally adapted to survive hot, dry environments by storing water within its leaves. In skincare, it offers that same resilience to our own skin by deeply replenishing hydration while calming visible redness and helping support the skin's natural recovery after time spent in the sun. It's also known for improving the appearance of uneven skin tone, making it a beautiful companion for skin that's been kissed by sunshine all season long.

Every evening after we returned from the beach, washing away sunscreen and salt with the Stone Crop Cleansing Oil became a small ritual. I would follow with the Stone Crop Body Oil, letting it sink into skin that had spent the day outdoors. It wasn't about undoing the day. It was about honoring it. Caring for my skin felt like an extension of caring for myself, a quiet reminder that restoration belongs in every season, especially one that asks us to spend so much time living fully outside.

Perhaps that's why Stone Crop became the heart of our Summer Experiences at The Tiny Spa. We wanted guests to leave feeling the same sense of restoration I felt after those evenings in Beaufort. Throughout our seasonal facial and massage, Stone Crop appears again and again—not simply because it's an exceptional ingredient, but because it tells the story of summer so beautifully. It hydrates what the sun has dried, comforts skin that has been warmed by long afternoons outdoors, and restores the healthy radiance that makes summer skin feel so alive.

As we drove home, I realized Beaufort had given me more than a weekend away. It reminded me that slowing down is a practice. That presence is something we choose. And that caring for ourselves isn't only about finding time to rest—it's also about paying attention to what we need once we've spent a day living well.

Summer will always leave its mark on us. The freckles will deepen, our shoulders will carry a little more color, and our skin will ask for a little more kindness. I can't think of a better reminder that the seasons aren't something to fight against. They're something to live alongside, caring for ourselves as they change us, one beautiful day at a time.

In Love & Gratitude,

Jamie
