Misconceptions About Waxing

Spring is here and you know what that means, so is waxing season. If you’ve never had a wax or maybe you have some myths in your mind about waxing - we’re here today to lay those out for you & hopefully take away some of those fears.

Here are the most common misconceptions when it comes to waxing:

  • Waxing is extremely painful: While it can be uncomfortable, the pain is typically manageable and varies depending on the tolerance level of the guest, the area being waxed and the type of wax being used. When using high-quality wax and proper techniques, discomfort is reduced.

  • Waxing makes hair grow back thicker & darker: This is a common one and it’s not true. When hair is waxed, it is removed from the root, which can make it appear thicker and darker temporarily; however, over time, the hair will revert back to it’s normal color and thickness.

  • Waxing causes ingrown hairs: While these can occur after waxing, they’re not specifically caused by waxing itself. Ingrown hairs are more likely to occur in people with curly or coarse hair. These can be prevented by regularly exfoliating the skin and avoiding tight clothing.

  • Waxing is just for women: Men can also benefit from waxing and can have hair removed from their chest, legs, & back.

  • You should shave before waxing: This is also not true. If you shave before a wax, it actually makes the hair too short to be effectively removed by the wax, which can lead to a less effective wax.

Now that we’ve addressed these misconceptions, hopefully we’ve taken away any lingering fears that you may when it comes to getting a wax. Of course if you still have reservations or questions, you can certainly talk to your dermatologist, esthetician, or any team member at The Tiny Spa.
